Self-publishing is a hot industry today and growing hotter all the time. New publishers as well as new services for self-publishers and authors are springing up all over the country. Everybody, from writing stars like Stephen King to publishing powerhouses like Random House, is rushing to join the new generation of independent publishers.

Despite the proliferation of movies, TV programs and videos with which we find ourselves surrounded, Americans read books—a lot of books. According to a recent Gallup survey, the average Jane and John read more than five times as many books per year now than they did a decade ago—about 17 to 20 volumes in a 12-month period. Book consumers eagerly gobble up everything from nonfiction recipes for improving health, wealth and spirituality to sci-fi. Cruise the aisles of any book emporium and you will find cookbooks, travel tomes, car repair manuals, mysteries, Westerns, advice for the lovelorn, astrology, Christian ethics, kids’ tales, business guides, biographies and much, much more. “We are a nation hungry for information,” says Marilyn Ross, an early proponent of self-publishing and co-founder and executive director of SPAN, the Small Publishers Association of North America.

“People have more leisure time with which they may choose to entertain, educate or motivate themselves,” explains Jan Nathan, executive director of PMA, the Publishers Marketing Association. “Also, people have developed niche interest areas and want to read all they can on a specific area. Schools have been stressing reading for some time now, not to mention the variety of products available for any age group to read and/or listen to.”

Fueled by this voracious appetite for reading material, the publishing industry has soared. More than 60,000 U.S. publishers currently spew forth over 120,000 titles per year, earning sales of more than $24 billion annually.

The aspect of all this that’s particularly exciting for the prospective self-publisher is that there are only a handful of big-league players left in the entire country. Where once there were dozens of “name” New York publishing firms like Simon & Schuster and Warner Books, a mere handful now fill the roster. This means there is now plenty of elbow room for self-publishers to make their own mark on the world. Seventy percent of American publishers—42,000 strong—are small independents who are often self-publishers. ......
